Meeting an author of experimental prose is always an honor for me. In this case I want to introduce you to Lily Arnell. She is from New York and she mixes poetry and music in her creative process. I had the pleasure to see a poem of mine published on her e-mag, the rocking “Silent Auctions“. Minimal and punk at the same time, Lily’s magazine is a gathering for incredibly talented poets, cartoonists, writers and much more. Incontrare un’autrice di prosa sperimentale è sempre un onore per me. In questo caso voglio presentarvi Lily Arnell. Lily viene da New York e mescola poesia e musica nel suo processo creativo. Ho avuto il piacere di vedere una mia poesia pubblicata sulla sua rivista on-line, la sensazionale “Silent Auctions“. Minimale e punk allo stesso tempo, il magazine di Lily è un punto d’incontro per molti poeti, fumettisti, scrittori di incredibile talento. Excerpt from Certain Ways She is Trying

Sometimes, when she looks in the mirror, she thinks about her face, that her face is her face and will always be her face. She will never know what people see when they look at her face- she is too familiar with her face- she knows its topography well. She cannot look at her face without all of its context. She says, “You and I are in it for the long haul, bud.” She feels warm friendship for her face- she didn’t choose it and it didn’t choose her, and they have both faced challenges because of that. There is no friendship she has that is more founded on pure compassion. She hopes others have come to similar places with their own faces because she feels sad when she considers the faces that are shamed by their hosts, abused with needles and harsh exfoliants, left never feeling good enough. She feels guilt when she thinks that she has not yet come to such an understanding with her torso. They both agree that they’ll address the problems later.

She frequently sees crows in groups of three. This happens so often that it feels like the most prominent and significant ‘through-line’ in her life. Her world feels small, like a damp, pleasant cavern, or “the study” as portrayed in the board game Clue when she perceives through patterns. She does not know what all the coincidences mean, but she is comforted by the idea that something is supposed to mean anything at all.

The view of the moon has great impact on how she values properties. She imagines becoming a real estate agent, gesticulating beside a white brick, art deco styled house on a wooded hilltop, saying, “This property has a remarkable view of the moon.” The prospective buyers will look up into the pale blue void and imagine the glowing orb perched above the cracked slate roof. She will say, “At 8 o’clock it hangs between the copper beech and the ginkgo.” They will say, “What rare specimen trees for this area.” She will say, “Have you seen the cove of Japanese Maples?” They will say, “We’ll pay cash.”

She imagines herself lecturing to a crowd, “Look at all these divisions!”
She was surprised by her ability to watch black-head-extraction videos on YouTube without gagging or experiencing any type of nausea, hich almost always occurred whenever she watched pimple-extraction-videos. Wondering if her ability to cope with extraction videos had altered since her last attempts, she watched a pimple extraction video titled, “Long and Satisfying,” during which she gagged and after which she felt nauseous for around 15 minutes.

Alle volte, quando lei si guarda allo specchio, pensa alla sua faccia, pensa che la sua faccia è la sua faccia e sarà sempre la sua faccia. Lei non saprà mai cosa vedono le persone quando la guardano in faccia – ha famigliarità con la sua faccia – conosce bene la sua topografia. Non può guardare il suo viso senza tutto il suo contesto. Dice: “Tu ed io ci siamo dentro da lungo tempo, amico”. Sente un’amicizia calorosa per il suo viso, lei non ha scelto lui e lui non ha scelto lei, e hanno affrontato delle sfide entrambi a causa di ciò. Non ha amicizie che siano più fondate sulla pura compassione di questa. Spera che altri si siano trovati in situazioni simili con le loro facce perché si sente triste quando considera che ci sono facce delle quali i loro ospiti si vergognano, abusate con aghi ed esfolianti aspri, che non si sentono mai abbastanza bene. Si sente in colpa quando pensa di non aver ancora raggiunto una tale comprensione verso il suo busto. Entrambi concordano sul fatto che affronteranno questi problemi in un secondo momento.

Lei vede frequentemente corvi a gruppi di tre. Questo succede così spesso che sembra la “linea di fondo” più importante e significativa della sua vita. Il suo mondo sembra piccolo, come una caverna umida e piacevole, o come “lo studio” rappresentato nel gioco da tavolo Cluedo, quando lo percepisce attraverso schemi. Non sa cosa vogliano dire tutte queste coincidenze, ma è confortata dall’idea che qualcosa potrebbe non significare assolutamente nulla.

La vista della luna ha un grande impatto su come lei valuta le proprietà. Si immagina di diventare un agente immobiliare, mentre gesticola accanto ad una casa in stile art deco fatta di mattoni bianchi, su una collina boscosa, dicendo: “Questa proprietà ha una straordinaria vista sulla luna”. I potenziali acquirenti guarderanno nel vuoto azzurro pallido e immagineranno la sfera luminosa arroccata sopra il tetto di ardesia incrinato. Lei dirà: “Alle 8 è sospeso tra il faggio ramato e il ginko”. Loro diranno: “Che esemplari di alberi rari per quest’area”. Dirà lei: “Avete visto la baia di aceri giapponesi?” Diranno loro: “Pagheremo in contanti”.

Lei si immagina di tenere conferenze a una folla, “Guardate tutte queste divisioni!”
Fu sorpresa dalla sua capacità di guardare video di estrazione di punti neri su YouTube senza avere conati di vomito o provare alcun tipo di nausea, che si verificava quasi sempre ogni volta che guardava video di estrazione di brufoli. Chiedendosi se la sua capacità di far fronte ai video di estrazione fosse cambiata dai suoi ultimi tentativi, ha guardato un video di estrazione di brufoli intitolato “Long and Satisfying”, durante il quale ha avuto conati di vomito seguiti da nausea per circa 15 minuti.

Lily Arnell is the founder and editor-in-chief of online literary and art magazine, Silent Auctions. She graduated from Sarah Lawrence College with a BA in creative writing in 2017. She is half of the musical duo “Uncle Kingsley” and currently lives in New York.
